From the Pastor=s Desk
Dear
Brothers & Sisters,
Early in life we begin collecting our
dreams. We dream about what we=re going to be when we grow up,
about being famous and popular and wealthy. We dream of a magnificent home and
of a lifestyle that turns heads. We carry about in our portfolio of fantasies
what love will look like, marriage and family and happily-ever-after. Yet there
comes a time when we are asked to let go, just as Jesus Christ had to do.
No matter how desperately we cling to our
dreams and all their meager shapes, our lives do become emptied, of dreams and
loves and successes, even of future possibilities. And in the process, if we
are open to it, we find our attitude becoming that of Christ Jesus.
In the midst of these most holy days, we
find ourselves discovering that Jesus= journey
was the same as ours C or rather we discover how our
journey is the same as that made by the Lord Jesus: one of being emptied so
that we might be filled by our God, filled with resurrection and life.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
On Good
Friday, we will take up the annual collection for the Holy Land. Your financial
contribution will help support the works of the Catholic Community in the
Middle East and protect the Holy Places and Christian shrines. On Easter we
will have the annual Regina Cleri collection. Envelopes for both these
collections are included in the box of Sunday contribution envelopes.
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL
Lent for
most of us is a time for reflection. We may look internally at how we can
enrich our lives spiritually, physically, and mentally so we can be a better
person. We might look outwardly at how we help others throughout the year. One
way we can do both is by participating in the Annual Catholic Appeal. By making
a donation, increasing your donation, and or volunteering a few hours one
evening to help work with the A.C.A. It is a fact that those people who give of
their time and treasures are happier people. It is in giving that we receive.
C St.
Vincent A.C.A. Committee
Did You Know. . . St. Vincent
High School received $120,000 from last year=s Annual

last year=s Annual
Catholic Appeal by receiving $24,000 in assistance for teacher=s salaries.

What is the association of the palm with Palm
Sunday? Where did the palm come from? Dino A.. Dear
Dino, Palm Sunday commemorates what is called
the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. When Jesus came to Jerusalem to celebrate
the Passover with his disciples, people met him and cheered him calling him
the Son of David. He was also called the King of Israel. In part they greeted
him this way because they heard that he had raised Lazarus from the dead. This joyful entry into Jerusalem is
recorded in all four gospels. The event can be found in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark
11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40, and John 12:12-19. All gospels agree that the people
cut leafy branches and waved them in greeting Jesus. The gospel of John says
they Atook
branches of palm trees and went out to meet him@
(12:13). We use palms as the people did to remember
that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem and was hailed as a king. A short time later,
he was crucified. The events we associate with Holy Week happen after this
triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday, then, begins Holy Week. We begin
the celebration of the Sacred Triduum during that week with the Mass of the
Lord=s
Supper. The Triduum concludes with the Mass of Easter Sunday. Father
Joseph Nolen, C.Ss.R. Read What
Is the Triduum (ID# 17530). For more information, please call our

A baptized person who wishes to become a
Catholic does so through the rite of reception of baptized Christians into
the full communion of the Catholic Church. Many parishes celebrate this
liturgy as part of the Easter Vigil, but it may take place any time of the
year. Baptized candidates are often put in
formation together with unbaptized catechumens. But their situation is quite
different. As baptized members of the Body of Christ, they need the specific
formation that prepares them to be received into the Catholic Church, whereas
unbaptized catechumens need a broader
formation to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Of course, some catechumens
have already had more Christian formation than some candidates, so the
preparation is best personalized for each individual. When those responsible for their formation
and the candidates agree that they are ready, the rite of reception is
celebrated. It may take place at a Sunday Mass, for example, any time of the
year. After the homily, everyone recites the
Creed together. Then the one to be received says, AI
believe and profess all that the holy Catholic Church believes, teaches, and
proclaims to be revealed by God.@ The
priest then recites the act of reception, which receives the person into the
Catholic Church. Immediately, the priest confirms the new Catholic.
A bishop does not need to do so on this occasion. The priest offers some sign
of welcome C a handshake or embrace, for
example. After the prayer of the faithful, the entire community may extend to
the new member a sign of peace. Then the one who has been received
participates in communion for the first time with the Catholic faithful.
